The Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology is the only department of its kind in Texas and has a rich tradition of excellence in education, research and outreach with an emphasis on veterinary and human medicine. The department houses the Michael E. DeBakey Institute for Cardiovascular Science and Biomedical Devices, the Reproductive Sciences Center, the Interdisciplinary Toxicology Program and the Center for Cell and Organ Biotechnology.
What we want
The Laboratory Animal Care Manager, under direction, oversees the operation of the physiology and pharmacology laboratories, ensuring compliance with regulations, coordinating teaching activities, and managing animal health programs. The manager will supervise daily tasks and implement safety procedures to maintain biohazard and environmental standards. Additionally, they handle administrative functions such as scheduling, purchasing, and personnel management while providing strategic guidance to leadership on program direction.

Qualifications
Required Education
Bachelor’s degree veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Five years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Licensed veterinary technician.
1 year experience teaching veterinary students.
1 year experience working with animal use protocols.
Proficiency with learning management systems.

Responsibilities
Coordination and Oversight of Animal Care Programs
Oversees the care and treatment of animals used as teaching models for VTPP.
Induces and monitors animals under anesthesia and coordinates necessary treatments for teaching animals.
Supervises record-keeping associated with the Animal Health Care and Adoption Programs.
Assists with generation and ongoing documentation for relevant animal use protocols.
Coordinates Animal Health Care and Adoption Programs, ensuring preventive health care procedures for teaching animals.
Responsible for the placement of teaching dogs into suitable adoption situations.
Performs basic veterinary technical skills (e.g. intravenous catheter placement, intubation, basic laboratory functions).
Staff Management and Development
Provides intermediate supervisory authority for technicians and students in the VTPP teaching laboratory, ensuring compliance with safety standards and proper use of equipment.
Supervises visiting technicians from other teaching programs.
Hires, trains, and evaluates job performance of technicians and student workers in the VTPP academic service section.
Safety and Compliance Management
Oversees compliance with Federal, State, and University guidelines for the use of animals.
Ensures adherence to approved animal use protocols for faculty and technicians.
Monitors compliance of state and federal regulations for animal use, chemical storage, and medical records in teaching activities.
Supervises the training of students in various animal-handling techniques, anesthesia administration, and post-procedure recovery.
Administrative Functions
Responsible for ordering all animals used in the departmental teaching program.
Manages inventory, purchasing, and resupply of laboratory pharmaceuticals and equipment for teaching labs.
Coordinates the transfer of equipment to surplus and ensures preparedness for inspections.
Communicates workspace concerns to the Facilities Coordinator and Professional Programs Office.
Academic administrative support (including and not limited to proctoring exams and exam reviews, grading worksheets, and interacting with the learning management system).
